马来西亚华裔作家张依苹的短篇故事集《哭泣的雨林》,可以看作是生活在马来亚的华裔二代居民中的女性,在成长过程中所获得的自我探索、自我定义的记录,是另外一种意义上的成长纪事,这一切构成了作家思考身份建构的文学形式。作者有意识地思考身份的认同,并积极探讨与周围马来、印度族群的文化差异与共同价值。作为女性作家,张依苹以诗一般洗练的语言,塑造出一个个人物复杂且细腻的感情,同时也为读者带来了特殊的视角。其明晰性、语言的弹性,都不同于与大陆或港台的作家,这明显是借镜于马来语、英语等文字而产生的表达效果。

The Weeping Rainforest, a collection of short stories, by Zhang Yiping(Chantelle Tiong Ee Ping), a MalaysianChinese writer, can be seen as a self-exploring and self-defining record gained in the growing-up process of women among the second-generation of Chinese residents in Malaysia, a chronicle of their growing up in another sense, all becoming a literary form of how the author thinks about the construction of identity. Consciously, the author thinks about the identity issue and actively explores the cultural differences from and common values with the surrounding Malay and Indian groups. As a woman writer,Zhang Yiping creates characters that have complex and delicate feelings in a language that is as succinct as poetry and has brought special perspectives for her readers. The clarity and elasticity of her language is different from mainland Chinese,Taiwan Residents or Hong Kongnese writers because it has clearly benefited from the strong points and expressive effects of such languages as Malay and English.
