Objective The effect of insulin injection in the treatment of diabetes depends on the correct technique of injection. To compare the safety of insulin pen-needle reuse and non-reuse in diabetic patients, and to provide guidance to patients in this area. Methods We searched Pub Med,Embase, the Cochrane library and CNKI to compare the safety of insulin pen-needle reuse and non-reuse in diabetic patients. Results Seven studies were included, including 18204 patients.Compared with insulin pen-needle non-reuse group, insulin pen-needle reuse increased the risk of subcutaneous flipohypertrophy [OR =2.28,95% CI(1.77,2.94)].The heterogeneity of the meta-regression findings may be due to the differences between the frequency of insulin pen-needle replacement and types of diabetes. Conclusion The strong evidence from our study supports that insulin pen-needle reuse may increase the risk of subcutaneous lipohypertrophy.Insulin pen-needles should be used for one time.
