Secularization of the Buddhist Thurification Ritual from Zen Books of the Tang and Song Dynasties

行香礼自佛教传入后,成为了中国佛教的重要礼仪。在唐宋禅院中,行香礼经历了去神佛化和世俗化演变的过程。借香谈禅之风盛行于禅林,行香礼被禅师们用来启悟僧徒、接待宾客,甚至被作为禅僧间斗机锋比禅法的赌注。佛教行香礼在唐宋禅院中被赋予了更多世俗化的功能。

After the Buddhism was introduced to China,the thurification ritual has become an important ritual of the Chinese Buddhism. In the temples of the Tang and Song Dynasties,the thurification ritual has experienced the evolution of de-deities and secularization. The ambience of discussing Zen through thurification prevailed in temples. Zen masters inspired disciples or entertained guests through the thurification ritual,which was even used as a stake by Zen Buddhists to compete for their expertise. Therefore,the Buddhist thurification ritual was endowed with more secular function in the temples of the Tang and Song Dynasties.
