Laser scanning technology provides a new approach for the digital protection of cultural relics in the collection of cultural institutions,and a new solution that can be applied in the digital archiving of cultural relics,the digital displaying,the establishment of digital library,and the preservation of cultural heritage.This paper describes the data acquiring devices of the laser scanning technology,the specific work flow,data product types,technical difficulties,and summarizes its advantages in the protection of cultural relics in the collection of cultural institutions.
