After the American Civil War, in America where there is full of deep-rooted racism, although the African American get the nominal freedom, most of them suffer much unequal treatment in reality. In Passing, the mulatto, Clare has similar skin color with the white people, but she belongs to black in blood. In order to get the satisfaction in material and spirit, she desires for being both white and black, which results in her racial identity confusion. From the perspective of ethical literary criticism, the author explores and analyzes Clare＇s racial identity to disclose the disorder and absurdity of the racial ethical norms in America.
