"诗可以怨"之"怨"包括两个方面内容:一是怨刺上政,二是抒发普通人的不平之鸣。包括爱情婚姻不幸之怨,游子思妇别离、相思之怨,小人物对生活琐事及自身命运之怨等。以诗抒写怨情表现了文人的担当以及他们对社会人生的关注。"诗可以怨"这一传统对文学创作影响深远。"发愤著书"、"不平则鸣"、"诗穷而后工"等理论都由此发端。
