The film What's in the Darkness,written and directed by Wang Yichun,appears in form to be a commercial production of youth narrative full of detective suspension,but is essentially a representation of social realism in content,serving as an model of Chinese independent film successfully breaking away from the overwhelming pressure from big-budget commercial productions. Through ingenious art of narration,this film reexamines the memories cherished by a teenage girl of the 1990 s,and pregnant with implications,brings some brutal but enlightening facts of that past age in front of contemporary viewers.
