现代意义上的青年是现代性进程的一种产物。在工业革命所发端的现代化潮流中出现了作为一种社会范畴的青年。青年在历史上发生和社会对于青年认识的形成这两者之间体现了逻辑与历史的统一。在现代社会早期所形成的青年概念,把青年的实质理解为一种过渡期,一个为了在未来时期进入社会生活而做准备的时期。晚近时期世界发展进程尤其是发达世界的状况对于经典的青年概念提出了严重的挑战,因此,在一种新的时代背景和社会情境下,青年概念的重构似乎成为了一项重要的研究课题。
