If you were to use one phrase to describe the bicycle market of the past two years, it would be insane financing and savage investment. Altogether, the capital between Mobike and Ofo amounts to over USD 3.3 billion, and the two companies announced that they had put over 30 million bicycles on the streets in 2017. Since the second half of last year, scores of bicycle sharing companies have gone under, and photographs of mottled mountains of bicycles have startled onlookers. Not only that, but Tencent and Alibaba have gradually climbed their way to the top of this pyramid-like ecosystem's spire, with Pony Ma and Jack Ma exchanging words on bike sharing in a few instances. This has clued the outside world in on the ambitions of the big wigs behind the bicycles and the tensions between the two internet empires, Alibaba and Tencent.China Entrepreneur sat down for exclusive interviews with many investors and insiders in Ofo,Mobike and Didi to try to get closer to the eye of the storm and get to the bottom of how this unprecedentedly complex situation in venture capital circles came to be, as well as the helplessness, wisdom, pain, intertwining, struggles and ambitions of all parties involved in this process.
