"The Shadow of the Wind": Interesting and Readable——Also on Differences between Serious Literature and Popular Literature

文学研究者通常将文学分为严肃文学和通俗文学,且有观点认为严肃文学的价值高于通俗文学。这里存在着误区,通俗文学作为感性解放时代的产物,将更多的读者引向文学,它的文学价值并不会因市场畅销而降低。而严肃文学也不一定要拒绝市场,只作为精英读者的读物。实际上,通俗文学和严肃文学都需面对更多的读者,这二者之间的距离没有想象中那般巨大,而是存在着流动的可能性。通俗文学向严肃文学借鉴更多的小说艺术手法,其畅销与读者的审美判断力密切相关,这将导向对文学分类本身的质疑,即将文学分为两类从历史性方面考虑是否具有合理性。西班牙作家萨丰的长篇小说《风之影》在口碑和销量上的双丰收或许可以为中国文学提供某种借鉴。

Scholars,who usually divide literature into serious literature and popular literature,hold the view that the value of serious literature is higher than that of popular literature. However,there is a misunderstanding. As a product of sensual liberation era,popular literature attracts more readers towards literature; its literary value is not reduced while it is well sold on the market. On the contrary,serious literature does not have to reject the market,to be the elite readers’ reading only. In fact,both popular literature and serious literature should face more readers,the distance between these two is not that huge as scholars imagined,and there is also a possibility of liquidity. Popular literature has to learn more skills from serious literary and its popularity is closely related to aesthetic judgment of readers,which will guide to the classification of literature itself. It means that the legality of dividing literature into two categories,considering from the historical aspects,is well worth thinking. Spanish writer Carlos Ruiz Zafón’s novel ＂ The Shadow of the Wind＂,harvesting both the reputation and sales,may be able to provide some references for Chinese Literature.
