Cakes and Ale is Maugham’ s favorite. Through this novel, the author exposes and criticizesthe merchandised literary world, and meanwhile, he expresses his reflection on literary creation and hisinterpretation of the truth, goodness and beauty in art. Except for the narrative surface of being humorous, thenovel also reveals the writer’ s exploration of the deep meaning of artistic creation and human nature.
