The development of the Production-Oriented Approach （POA, Wen, 2016） has impressed me as an exemplary application of design-based research. The unique ways in which research has shaped this innovative approach to language teaching are worth my elaborating on here because the principles and applications of design-based research are not well known in China, and they are just starting to emerge elsewhere in the field of applied linguistics （e.g., Cumming, 2015; Schleppegrell, 2013）, despite their being welcomed and widely practiced in educational research internationally over recent decades （Anderson ＆ Shattuck, 2012; Brown, 1992; Design-Based Research Collective, 2003; Schoenfeld, 2006）.
