Susan Sontag's works of fiction are an artistic system embedded with different writing techniques and various literary images, in which space has special functions and great significance. Taking her short story "Debriefing" as the main material for close observation, this essay analyzes the way in which distinctive sensory narration represents New York's urban spaces and urban image of a labyrinth, and argues that this labyrinth image reflects the urban regression, social changes and cultural evolution of New York City during 1960s-1970s. This essay also claims that "space" is always foregrounded in Sontag's fiction-writing and helps to produce values in the texts, and explores the constitutive effects on her literary conception brought by her unique temporal-spatial view.
