The Stereotypical Presentation of the Chinese in Mainstream American TV Series

本文对美国主流电视剧中华人角色进行梳理,尝试归纳美国流行文化再现华人形象的各类刻板印象及其文化根源,从而为我们理解中美两种文化相互理解的机制提供经验依据。本文认为,对刻板印象的考察和分析有助于我们讨论文化交流过程中误解和偏见的形成机制,以及上述机制与社会政治经济结构勾连的方式。有效的对外传播与国家形象塑造工程也离不开对于刻板印象的正确认识和科学态度。

This article combs through Chinese characters portrayed in mainstream American TV series, and distills stereotypes of the Chinese community as represented by American popular culture. From a historical perspective, this article proposes the idea that a proper understanding of the mechanism of stereotypical portray- al is helpful for researchers to discuss the misunderstandings and bias in intercultural communication, thus is necessary for the establishment of effective international communication strategy.
