Elizabeth Bishop's contemplative poem "At the Fishhouses"and Samuel Taylor Coleridge's ballad"The Rime of the Ancient Mariner",though different in form, length and style, have notable but unusual echoes in their treatment of experiences with the sea. Furthermore, the implied authors of the two works have comparative values and states of mind, and the stylistics of both works share similarities. Bishop's attentiveness towards the beauty in the ordinary, her perspective on the supernatural, and her attitude toward animals make her an ideal listener who would appreciate the significance of the Mariner' s tale. The motif of water as knowledge and the symbol of transmutation as a process of learning are what resonates between the two works.
