Introduction and Development of the ‘Urban Design’ Idea in Japan

本文旨在通过梳理日本从19世纪末开始的引入近代城市规划、1940年代以后建设城市规划学科、1960年代成立东京大学城市设计研究室、到目前致力推进"街区营造"的历史发展过程,探讨和剖析城市设计这一概念在日本的接受与发展。

In order to clarify the introduction and development of a specific idea called ＇urban design＇, this paper analysis the entire forming process of modern planning system in Japan, which started from the end of 19th century, experienced the founding of its education programs and discipline from 1940s to 1960s, and developed into a new form of local-based Machizukuri idea nowadays.
