Phil Klay in his debut short story collection Redeployment paves new ground for American post-9/11 war writing. He refuses to repeat the classic paradigms, exemplified by authors like Ernest Hemingway and Tim O＇Brien, which are solely concerned with desperation and trauma. Nor does Klay label the contemporary Iraq war as ＂some mystically unspeakable experience.＂ Rather, he seeks for a pragmatic ethics that takes one＇s war experience and daily life as commensurable, and consequently realizes the communicative potentials and ethical dialogues between soldiers and civilians.
