As one of the most important representatives in American literature of post-romanticism in the nineteen century,Hawthorne devoted himself to exploring the＂sin＂,the source of all kinds of social evils in America. He was skilled in narration and characterization by means of symbolism,among which flowers,letters,names and scenes etc.were the common symbolic elements.
