Washington Irving, Father of American Literature, was the first great American Romantic essayist. The Sketch Book, his masterpiece, was regarded as the beginning of modem short stories. In Rip Van Winkle and The Leg-end of Sleepy Hollow, two of the most representative novels, Irving has depicted harmonious and peaceful environ- ment and complimented unsophisticated characters in which his ecological consciousness could be embodied.
