Jodi Picoult's Small Great Things tells the stor^^ of Ruth Jefferson, the only black nurse in the all white Mercy-West Haven Hospital, and the medical litigation she goes through and her final acquittal after many tortures and much hardship. The racial discrimination which Ruth and her fellow black people have experienced exposed in this no-vel reveals the writer's concern over the injustice that the black suffer from. The final reconciliation between the black and the white people indicates the tolerance and care of American melting pot. This paper explores the sufferings and experiences of the black people in Small Great Things as well as their awakening of identification from Du Bois's double consciousness perspective and endeavors to analyze briefly the historical context and social injustice which the American black community goes through.
