An elaboration and discussion is made of the conception of foreignizing translation brought forward by Friedrich Schleiermacher on the basis of a detailed analysis of his famous speech entitled ＂On Two Different Approaches to Translation＂.This paper explores the two different methods of translation advocated by Friedrich Schleiermacher coupled with the historical background,dissects the cultural and political agenda behind his advocacy,and points out the inspirations and limitations as well. This exploration will draw an overall picture of the abundant connotations of Schleiermacher ＇s conception of foreignizing translation so that a fair and dialectical perspective of this conception can be achieved.
