However, unplanned construction, absence of sewerage facilities, and lack of privacy once drove people to move out, and voices of those workers knocking down the worn-out alleys could be heard from time to time. Now, a number of architecture firms have acted to preserve the hutongs while meetingpeople's demands with a reasonable degree of comfort.
