在安西都护府建立之前,唐与西突厥的关系已经很密切。为遏制西突厥的扩张和进一步经营西域,唐设立了安西都护府。而在郭孝恪任安西都护期间,安西都护府和西突厥之间开始发生越来越频繁的战争,既有相互之间直接的冲突交战,也有争夺附属国控制权的间接冲突,结果多以安西都护府的胜利而告终。
