Optical quality control of high density disc formats

While all HD formats, such as Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD, differ in the actual disc construction, capacity and encoding, there are some common characteristics. All formats utilize blue laser technology in order to deliver higher spatial data densities, and the actual track-pitch tends to be very similar. In addition, the typical acceptable defect or contamination is found to be in the same order of magnitude. This article covers both, changes needed to adapt in-line and off-line optical quality control equipment to high density disc production, as well as those aspects, carried over from DVD production.
