The Grand Vision of Social Revolution and Asian Transformation:Ozaki Hotsumi's Theory on Modern China

Ozaki Hotsumi is Japan's remarkable China observer in the period prior to the World War II. From the grand perspective of social revolution in the 20 th century,he discussed many issues concerning China and SinoJapanese relations,and many of his views are still profoundly relevant today. This article focuses on the following issues. First,how did Ozaki Hotsumi capture the political significance of the Chinese national movement and its correlation with social revolution before and after the Sinto-Japanese War,which enabled him to form a comprehensive and dynamic perspective of Chinese society? Second,what kind of foresight did he reveal in his observation of the Chinese Communist Party,the Kuomintang and its Nanjing government? Third,how did his thinking on the fundamental solution to the Sino-Japanese relations at the height of the war inherently relate to the schemes of Asian socialism and the ideas of world revolution? Finally,an attempt will be made to elucidate the contemporary significance of his intellectual heritage.
