The three monarchs including Pepin the short, Charlemagne and Louis the pious carried out a lenient policy toward the Jews who lived in the Frankish kingdom in the early Carolingian period. This policy was implemented to develop economy, to expand the Christian culture, and to deify their own image. Through the implementation of the policy, the power of Jews under the Carolingian Empire was enhanced; however, this also gave rise to strong opposition from members of the church. The Carolingian monarchs pursued a more pragmatic view of religion and formed a distinct relationship between religion and politics in which imperial power was higher than the power of religion. As a result, the Carolingian monarchs were able to implement a more liberal Jewish policy. However, with the decline and the collapse of the Carolingian Empire, this policy soon came to an end.
