德格印经院是现在人们的习惯称呼,它的本名是“德格吉祥聚慧院”.印经院座落在甘孜州德格系城东边,是一座典型的藏式平顶楼房,厚墙褐红,金顶辉煌,一派喇嘛寺庙特有的风貌和威严.按印经院首批刊刻的书版《甘珠尔》和《四部医典》刻后所题年代推算,德格印经院建于清雍正七年(1729年).倡建者是德格第12代土司曲加·登巴泽仁.后经历代土司不断扩建,到1949年时,已成为全藏区规模最大、书版最多、组织健全、设备完善的印经院.
Dege Sutra Printing House, built in 1729, is located at Dege County,Gan-zi Tibetan Autonomous Prefectureof Sichuan Province.lt is one of the three largest sutra collecting houses in China. It holds all the necessities of printing such as paper depositary, printing shop, binding room, as well as the depositary of Buddhist sutras, Buddhist hall and baldachin. The House keeps a large collection of books including the world’s famous serial"Gan Zhu’er" and "Dan Zhu’er" . and other Buddhist sutras, translations, biographies and historical notes.
