Chengdu used to be the start of the "Southwest Silk Road", an international passageway of economy and culture. This passage extanded, passing through Burma and India via Yunan Province of China crossing the Hengduan Mountains, as far as to the middle Asian and European countries. Zhang Qian, an official in the Han Dynasty once witnessed the clothing and stick made in Chengdu on his way to the middle Asian area more than one thousand years ago. A large number of shell money have been unearthed today from the Sanxingdui Relics site in Guanghan City, close to Chengdu. These shells were identified by the experts to be living in the warm sea water near India and Burma. So the southwest silk road was out of question an international commercial passage which was opened more than 3,000 years ago.
