Over the past two years,Buddhist and other charitable organizations have been focusing on offering aid to school dropouts and the poor in Sichuan Province. From 1994 to 1996, they made donations of approximately 1 million yuan. This was distributed to over twenty poor counties to help some 8, 000 children who had because of poverty dropped out of school. Further donations of 134, 000 yuan and 231, 904 yuan were given respectively to Emei City,and the northern county of Nanjiang to help the school dropouts in those areas.They plan, this year, to make another donation of 300, 000 yuan to help erect a "Project Hope Primary School" in Nanjing County. In addition to the aforementioned charitable work, the Buddhist organisations have also helped the disabled in the province. Figures indicate that, in recent yearsl financial donations from the Buddhist circle have totalled more than 1 million yuan.
