Zhang Mingsheng was born in Changning County, Sichuan Province in 1940. In his childhood he was deeply influenced by his father, who was himself a good calligrapher and by his mother, an excellent embroiderer. He entered the affiliated school to Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 1957 and made rapid progress in his painting skills; showing an exceptional ability in water-colour painting. Zhang Mingsheng has worked hard and formed his own unique painting style. Most of his painting draw inspiration from real life, especially ordinary everyday life. His work is full of a sense of beauty. He is an expert in using colour for contrast, thus making his painting more vivid and touching. His painting integrates the technique of reality seen in Western painting, and the freehand brush work seen in traditional Chinese painting.
