Chengdu is a well-known base of grain, oil crops and live pigs of China, occupying an imnortant position in the agricultural production of Sichuan. However, in recent years, the cultivated land in Chengdu Plain has been in a increasingly worse condition of being taken up for non-agricultural purpose or being spoiled artificially. To halt all of this.the Chengdu Municipal Government has worked out a development program not at the cost of cultivated land. According to it.Chengdu will be expanded eastward andsouthward, and thus the 3rd ring road andthe outerring road will be built. Morestresses will be devoted to develop theLongquan District. Besides, a satellite cityproper will be planned around the Chengdu New High-Tech development Zone and the South Railway Station, and the SouthRenmin Road will be consequentlyextended to the Huayang Township in the south suburbs of Chengdu. This measure will be of great importance to the preservation of the farmland, protection ofthe age-old city as well as the to thepromotion of the local economy.
