Ancient City of Pingyao—A World Cultural Heritage

1997年12月3日,在意大利那不勒斯召开的联合国教科文组织世界遗产委员会第21届会议一致通过决议,把我省平遥古城列入世界文化遗产名录。世界文化遗产,特指被联合国教科文组织确认的人类罕见的、目前无法替代的财产,其价值必须具有真实性和唯一性。列入名录,将受到联合国教科文组织一百多个成员国的共同保护和集体援助,即使战争中,也不能列入军事攻击目标。截至1997年底。

Since the 16th century A.D., the ancient city of Piugyao has been an important commercial city. In the middle of the 19th century, it was in its prime, and on one occasion became a modern finance center of China. On June 28, 1997, through investigation and evaluation by international experts, the presidium of the Unite Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization hold that the Pingyao City is an outstanding example of Chinese Han city in period of the Ming Danasty and the Qing Danasty. It preserved all its unique features, showed us an unusual picture scroll in the development of culture, society, economy and religion in Chinese history. At two o’ clock, the early morning of Dec 4, 1996 (Beijing Time), the World Heritage Committee held its 21th conference, and at this conference the Ancient City of Pingyao was approved for entering the " World Heritage Directory".
