Shanxi's Foreign Trade in the Past 20 Years

改革开放二十年来,山西对外经贸工作蓬勃发展,促进了全省经济发展和社会进步,其作用集中体现在: 对外贸易规模的不断扩大。促进了经济外向度的提高 1978年全省外贸出口额仅有730万美元。到1997年发展到16.4亿美元,增长了224倍。

With the beginning of the reform and blossoming business negotiations to the outside world, foreign trade in Shanxi has progressed rapidly. In 1978, the trade volume was only US$7.3 million. By the year 1997, it reached US$1.64 billion, a 224 fold increase. With the deepening of the foreign trade system reform, foreign trade in Shanxi improved greatly. By the end of September 1998, there are 242 enterprises engage in foreign trade, thousands of enterprises having investment from abroad. 11 of the prefectures and 1/3 of the counties have foreign management rights. The Yang Cheng Power Plant, Wanjiazhai Project are good examples. Also, telecom and transportation have developed rapidly. Thousands of commodities have been exported and 100 varieties of goods worth up to one million US dollars have been sold to countries and areas around the world.Since 1995, coke has been in great demand instead of coal, which means Shanxi has become a resource processing base. Shanxi have drawn much attention from big international corporations. BOC, ABC Railway Products Co., New Zealand Steel and Iron Co. have invested money into big corporations like Taiyuan Steel and Iron Group Co.
