As a province in the midwest regions of China, Shanxi has two typical advantages, first 0f which is theextremely rich underground mineralresoucres, especially coal and hauxite. These two mineral resoucres make up a great percentage of the whole nation’s reserves. That’s the reason why Shanxi province is considered as an important energy base in China.The second advantage is that Shanxi has a long history and a splendid culture, renowned as ".birthplace of the chinese nation".According to statistics, more than 7O% of China’s existent wooden architecture before 9O7 - l234 A. D are in Shanxi province. If Shaanxi Province is called the underground museium for the Mausoleum of Emperor Qin and terra - c0tta warriors, then Shanxi is no douht the nati0n’s largest above - ground museium. Ancient splendid culture, modem brilliant achievements, as well as the beautiful scenery and rich natural resources comprise of the characteristics of Shanxi culture. For many years, especially in the recent 2O years, with the support of the CPC Central Committee and the State government, Shanxi has made swift devel0pments, It has formend an integrated industrial system, and also people’s livelihood has heen evidently improved.However, compared with thecoastal areas and those developedareas in the east, Shanxl still has along way to g0. We have many bigproblems such as, h0w to manage thestate - owned enterPrises, how to ad-Just the economie structure, h0w t0give great impetus to the technologi-cal progress and how t0 improve thequality and profits of our economicdevelopment, etc.In short, two cruxes should he noted f 0ne is to put great effort to adjust the economic structure by enhancing the transformation of the second industry and speeding up the development of the third. An0ther is to promote the technological progress and stick to the two strategies:- strategy of development of Shanxi with a on science &Technology - strategy of sustainahle development.Only in this way could we catch UD with and aertake the advanced.
