Developing agriculture is the basic state policy to feed a population of 1200 million, while the crux to agriculture development is the fertilizer industry. With an investment of 1600 million RMB from the government and a complete set of equipment imported, Shanxi Fertilizer Plant began to he built in 1983.During the 12 years since it went into production in 1987, the Plant has been developed into a coal chemical industrial group, with 6 subordinate companies, 12 p1ants, 3 workshops, a fixed assets of 2500 million RMB and a staff of more than 6000. On Oct. 10, 1997, Shanxi Fertilizer Plant was transformed into Tianji Coal Chemical Industry Group, Ltd, with a present annual production capacity of: 300000 tons of ammonia, 540000 tons of nitric acid and 900000 tons of N-P compound fertilizers. Besides, 260000 tons of cement and 26 million plastic woven bags, 200000 tons of ammonium nitrate and 5OOOO tons consentrate nitric acid are produced every year. Now, the Group is known as a large compound fertilizer plant, unique in Asia for its phosphorous nitrate producing from coal, and is considered as one of the best large8ized chemical enterprises in the world.
