personal name Bei Ming, alias Yu Shan), a native of Yongning (today’s Lishi City), was born in the 45th year of the Wanli reign of the Ming dynasty. He was recommended to study in the Imperial College in the 12th year of the Chongzhen reign (1639) and became official in the 18th year of the Shunzhi reign (1661) of the Qing dynasty. He served successively as County Magistrate, Prefecture Magistrate, District Magistrate, Intendant of Circuit, General Inspector, Chief Secretary, Province Governor, and Governor-General. He was thrice cited as "zuoyi" (outstanding and unique) for his honesty and talent in the Qing official appraisal system. He died of illness at Jiangning (today’s Nanjing) in the 23rd year of the Kangxi reign at the post of Liangjiang Governor-General. He was posthumously conferred the title of "qingduan" (honest and upright) and put on the pedestal of "Taizitaibao" (Grand Guardian of the Crown Prince).
