摘要 Shanxi had been noted as a militarily strategic location as it is cloaked with hills and girdled by rivers; it was also an ideal place from both defensive and offensive points of view. As a result, it had been seen as an arena for military forces to take up the gauntlet. And since time immemorial, it had been at the forefront of ethnic mingling and contention, and plagued from time to time by tribal turbulence and turmoil. Hence the people of Shanxi had a long tradition of militancy. Way back in the Wei-Jin period of the Three Kingdoms (220-280), Shanxi was the birthplace of many great generals, like Guan Yu of the Shu Kingdom; Xu Huang, Zhang Liao, Guo Huai of the Wei Kingdom; of whom, Zhang Liao was the best known and bravest. Zhang Liao (169-222), styled as Wen Yuan, was born in Mayi, Yanmen (today’s Shuozhou, Shanxi). He was a famous general of the Wei Kingdom. During his more than two decades of military career, he always emerged victorious in every battle, defensive or offensive. In knowledge of his bravery and intelligence, he was bestowed the title of Lord of Duting and later Lord of Jinyang, which were rarely granted to generals. When praising Zhang Liao, Cao Pi said that in the Battle of Hefei, Zhang defeated 100,000 enemies with a battalion of only 800 men and that it was really something remarkable and unprecedented in history. In the Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms, he was singled out as leader of the "Five Wei Generals".
