A mere mention of Shanxi invariably conjures up images of coal. Some s ay the main reason for Shanxi’s rapid growth in recent years is solely due to th e resurgent coal market and once coal reserves are depleted or coal market becom es weak, Shanxi could not escape the insidious "resource trap" any more than bef ore. But, it is not difficult for anyone with a slightest knowledge of Shanxi to come to the conclusion that it is not the dynamic coal market, however robust, that contributes to the faster development of Shanxi’s economy, but it is rather the high tech and innovation and upgrade of traditional industries that have gi ven a real boost to its economic ascendancy.
