A Study of Politics of Redemption in Waiting for the Barbarian

对于库切的小说《等待野蛮人》的政治内涵与伦理思考,评论界历来存在不同的意见,认同与质疑的声音互相交织、彼此争锋。而库切本人则倾向于支持前者。现从阿甘本、阿伦特与本雅明等思想家的理论中汲取灵感,分析小说中苦难的生成机制——主权权力的敌我划分,探讨苦难的表现症候——赤裸生命,并进一步思考库切在文本中隐含的救赎策略,进而从政治哲学的维度对小说进行阐释。

In terms of the political implication and ethical thinking in J. M. Coetzee＇s Waiting for the Barbarian,there are different opinions among critics. Some support the idea that this novel is concerned about political and ethical issues,while others choose to cast doubt on this. Coetzee himself tends to support the former. This article takes inspiration from the philosophy of Giorgio Agamben,Hannah Arendt and Walter Benjamin to analyze the mechanism that makes suffering happen,that is,the distinction between friend and enemy by sovereign power,examine the symptoms of the suffering of bare life,and goes further to discuss the underlying strategies for redemption in Coetzee＇s text. Therefore,it is an interpretation of the novel from the perspective of political philosophy.
