The straightforwardness of House W renders itself as extraordinary in contemporary China. With an obviously modernist appearance, the project builds its autonomy on a deliberately disjunctive attitude towards the surrounding environment, yet a sense of complexity, even confliction of the program can be found after a detailed examination. Taking these characteristics into account, the essay analyzes both the motivations and tactics of the project, and examines the operative effects of the actual building. In a retrospective historical discussion, rethinking the possibility of an alternative modernist practice in a radically changed social context.
