As a representative academic novel in Britain after World War II, History Man presents how academics construct their identity as intellectuals in the fractured times of cultural crisis. Howard and Barbara Kirk in this novel try their best to live up to the social conventions of the 1960s and infiltrate anti-cultural traits in their construction of identities as intellectuals with permissive sexual behaviors, consumption of academic achievements and radicalism in their political attitude. Malcolm Bradbury intends to show that humanism should be responsible in leading culture back into the construction of intellectual identity.
