Alice Munro's "Carried Away", a short story in the collection Open Secret, depicts the love entanglements of Louisa the librarian, Jack the soldier, and Arthur the factory owner. The "library" provides the space and clues for the development of plots, which sheds light on the historical moment of Canada's national independence and on the town people's life at that time. As the centralized symbol of civilization, progress and humanity, the library is given great significance in the story as an ordered space to contest the chaos of war, as the site of information dissemination, infiltration and discourse construction in the national identity formation of Canada and as the monumentto commemorate the Canadians in their effort to preserve the cultural heritage and to enlighten the public minds in the changing economic situations.
