The Macalien Building's design required a reassessment of residential typologies to produce an innovative and sustainable building that worked within a developer's requirements. It is fully integrated- in structure, MEP, and sustainability- and replete with sustainable features which made it the first LEED Gold certified multi-family housing in Boston. The building occupies a site that mediates between highway off-ramps, a residential neighborhood, and an industrial zone, and it negotiates different scales and urban configurations to address these contexts. The staggered truss system allows for flexibility in unit-types, creating versatility and customization for residents in the 144 units. The building also houses retail space, indoor/outdoor community space for residents, and parking.
