Since the introduction of the railway system in Japan, the central part of the big city has developed with the railway terminal station as the core. National railway system began with military, resource and cargo transportation, and passenger transport also increased after World War II. After national railroad was privatised in 1987, passenger transport became the main focus, and in addition to railway transport, it began to do various kinds of projects. Among them, the big success is the construction of a "station building" that is a complex building such as a cornmercial facility or a hotel, and raising profit. Among them, what made great success was the construction of "station building" that is a complex building such as commercial facility and hotel to generate profits. It is no exaggeration to say that the station building is not just a business unit of a railway company but a town planning that accelerates the development of the centre of the city as its core. Kyoto Station Building is a success example. Twenty years after construction, we are working on the problem of continuing to sustain tiffs building until the next century and how to deal with environmental problems such as climate change.
