Chen Yinque and Historical Materialism

陈寅恪的史学与唯物史观的关系可梳理为两个层面：在单纯的方法论层面，陈寅恪受到近代社会学方法的潜在影响，重视社会群体本位和经济因素，与唯物史观有一定的趋同之处；但在学术与政治交涉的层面，他强调学术独立，拒绝政治对学术的干扰，跟意识形态化的唯物史观又是截然对立的。

Chen Yinque’s historiography and its relationship with historical materialism can be analyzed in two levels. One is pure methodology. Influenced by modern sociological methods, Chen Yinque emphasizes more on the very existence of social communities and their economic statuses, which share certain similarities with the approaches of historical materialism. Second is the political intervention in academic studies. Chen stresses the importance of academic independence and resists political interference, which directly contradicts the ideology of historical materialism.
