Hong Kong is a city that witnessed the course of socio-political upheaval of modern China. Though located at the geographical and cultural periphery of Chinese history, Hong Kong was the center of Sino-Western Cultural encounters. It not only captured Chinese cultural transformation since late Qing but also the imperial systems of knowledge of the West. This is a land where its people, culture, politics, and systems of thoughts cross boundaries and become historical memories. At the brink of Hong Kong's transfer in 1997, Chinese scholars first wrote Hong Kong literature back into Chinese literary history. In the twenty-first century, Hong Kong literature officially becomes a minor field of Chinese literary studies. Thirty years after the history of Hong Kong literature was written, Professor Chan Kwok Kou Leonard of the Education University of Hong Kong started editing A Critical Study of Literary Criticism in Early Hong Kong Literature(1919—1949) in 2009. The first of its kind, this twelve-volume collection was published by The Commercial Press of Hong Kong in 2016. In July of the same year, Collection of Critical Introductions was published to facilitate readers of diverse backgrounds with Hong Kong literature and its literary history. Through the long traditions of both Chinese literary history and Western literary criticism, this collection reveals a unique Hong Long literature that reflects its multiple histories and cultural identities.
