With the colonial expansion of Europe, the oriental paintings became popular in 19th century. The material of artists wasn't confined to exotic customs and scenery any more. Instead,it extended to the bathroom, women's boudoirs and the Ottoman harem. Influenced by colonialism and doctrine of racial superiority, their representation of the east depends mainly on arbitrary imagination and distortion rather than objective facts. In their works, the east was portrayed as a paradise for westerners' desire, and women, especially black women were discriminated seriously, all of which were linked to the colonial politics.
