As one of the representative gures of the second generation of the Kyōto School of sinology, Honda Shigeyuki is well-versed in both the history of Chinese Confucian classics and ancient Chinese documents, but his academic achievements have long been ignored. The present article focuses on Honda’s research into the history of Confucian classics, especially by exploring his thesis that “shamanism” is a source of Chinese culture. In addition, his thought is put into comparison, on the one hand, with the ideas of other Kyōto School scholars to shed light on the development of that school of thought, and on the other hand, with his sinological contemporaries, so as to appropriately evaluate his place in Japanese academia. Such comparisons highlight the fervent debates about the origin of the Chinese culture in the Taishō period, which marks a transition from traditional sinology to modern Chinese Studies.
