The 14-3-3 protein plays an important role in parasite development and environmental adaptation.Recent studies have shown that the 14-3-3 protein can bind to a plethora of interacting signaling proteins including phosphatases, kinases and some transmembrane receptors, thus participating in a wide range of important regulatory processes, such as signal transduction, metabolism, cell growth, cell proliferation and differentiation, apoptotic cell death, and cell cycle control. Systematic studies on the 14-3-3 protein can advance our understanding of the biological functions and regulatory mechanisms of parasite growth and development. This review summarizes the gene iden-tification, structure, biological functions and application potentials of the 14-3-3 protein in parasites.
