Harmonious Music and Magnificent Music in Ancient Chinese Music Discourses

中国古代音乐哲学思想中的"和乐"是指有所节制的音乐。"和乐"的极端化表现成为"大音"。"和乐"是"大音"的初始阶段,不理解"和乐",则无法体会"大音"。两者的内涵有所差异,其目的一样。表层是为了"和心",为了人能获得长久的幸福和快乐,实质是为了社会的和谐安定。

In ancient Chinese music philosophical thoughts, harmonious music refers to a moderate music. The ulti- mate representation of harmonious music is magnificent music. Harmonious music is the starting phase of magnificent music. So, if we do not understand harmonious music, we could understand magnificent music. The two have differ- ent connotations, but, their ends are the same. On the surface layer, they aim to harmonize the heart, and bring hap- piness and wishes to people, and its essence is to bring a social harmony.
